Getting the Chills at Chill Ice House Toronto
I love when I come across little discoveries around Toronto. I've heard about this place for years, but never really made the effort to go. But when it was my turn to plan Girl's Night Out, I used it as my opportunity to finally check out Chill Ice House Toronto; A bar completely made out of ice!
Now you're probably thinking, 'Why would I want to go to a bar that's freezing?' Well, I'm actually not sure why you'd want to, to be honest. Well I guess there are those odd freaks who enjoy cold, winter months, sadness, man buns...etc Ha! Seriously, you guys who love the cold are my hero's. I'll choose sun and sand any day! But what I do know, is if you like to experience something out of the norm, this is definitely something that you'd like to try out.
Firstly, always look out for them on Groupon. If you're going in a big group (which I would probably suggest), then they have some great deals on Groupon for a discounted rate to get in and to enjoy a specialty shot. If you don't get a Groupon, it is $20 per person cover charge to get in. Like I said, going in a group might be a bit better. When I went, I went with 2 girlfriends, and we were the only ones there. Later on in the evening, two groups showed up (I think it was a bridal party), so then it became a little more lively. I was actually okay with having the place to myself though because I'm just straight extra and enjoyed the space to take all my extra photos.
So pretty much how it works; There are actually 2 bars next to each other. The first bar is a regular bar. I don't think you need to pay cover to get in, and next door is Chill Ice House. They offer you a cape and gloves to put on because it's -5 degrees inside!
Being the germophobe that I am, I did take the cape however I declined on the gloves ( I don't know what kinda cooties were in those gloves...lol) This turned out to be a big mistake on my part. If you are going, please accept the gloves....cooties and all!
Once you walk in, the blast of cold just hits you, but the awesomeness of the whole place actually makes you forget about how cold it is. Absolutely everything was ice! The seated lounge area? Ice. Fixtures and decorations? Ice!!! I've never seen anything like that before. To save you from freezing your ass off (literally!) they use throw blankets over the seating so there's a little buffer between you and the ice.
It could be because we were the only ones there, but there was no permanent bartender at the bar. I'm thinking that would be a little cruel to have a bartender permanently at a -5 degree bar. So when we were ready to order, a bartender from the warm bar would put on a jacket and head over to the Chill bar. Only specialty shots are available in the chill bar which are pre-mixed. They're served in shot glasses made of ice! Now this is when I regretted my decision not to take the gloves. It was cold to hold the ice glass! However the alcohol did warm up the system to tolerate the cold a little more.
They even had an air hockey table made of ice (This would be the second time that I regretted not taking the gloves....don't be like me...take the gloves.) Just to be clear, I am unbeatable at air hockey. UNBEATABLE!!! Please don't let this innocent smile fool you, I am very competitive! I've made some grown men cry. Just saying.
Overall, if you're looking for something different to try, or somewhere to plan a group event, I would highly recommend the Chill Ice House in Toronto. We probably stayed in there for about 30 minutes until we couldn't deal with the cold anymore, but you totally have the option of going back and forth between the warm bar and the chill bar throughout your reservation time.
