JukGyal Toronto

I have always been uncoordinated on the dance floor. Actually that's a lie! When I was in high school I was like a dancehall Queen. Every new move that came out, I was on top of it. I even had my red suede Filas, grape ring and Dongirl chain to go with it.

I was the ish with this chain!

I was the ish with this chain!

Man back in those days, if you didn't have ringlets with crimps and a roots belt, they'd revoke your dancehall card real quick. But I'm not sure what has happened along the way. Perhaps university, a 9-5,  bills...something happened why my coordination just up and abandoned me.

So what do you do when you have a passion for dancehall, but your body is a little stiff? You sign up for JukGyal.  JukGyal is a dancehall fitness workshop taught by choreographer extraordinaire Jae Blaze. Jae is originally from Toronto, but lives in LA now. She's worked with artists like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj....oh and you know a little song by Kanye West called Faded? Remember the video with Teyana Taylor working her middle? Yeah...Jae Blaze did that!! I actually wish I had known this fact before taking this workshop, cause I have practiced that faded routine many a times in my bedroom mirror and I'm almost positive if I had auditioned it for Jae she probably would have taken me on tour with her!

Every few months she takes her workshop on the road, and if you're lucky enough, you'll score tickets to her workshop which sold out within a couple of days of her announcing it.

I experienced my first JukGyal a few months ago. I went solo dolo. I really didn't know much about it, but it kept popping up on my instagram so I figured I should try it out. I'm not sure what I expected to be honest, but what I didn't expect was to be pained up for days after! Woooiiiii... Her first move was just teaching you whining basics. Now listen, I might not be able to jump off speaker boxes and land on my head, but what I can do is whine; or so I thought! So first you're whining clockwise. We're good. Then she decided to tell us to whine counter clockwise. Simple enough right? Nope! I swear I couldn't hold a beat  (I'm just gonna pause right here, cause some of you are probably laughing at me thinking I can't dance. Then you're gonna try to whine counter clockwise. Then you're gonna realize that you look just as awkward as me....done yet? May I continue?)

So after experiencing it solo, I decided this time I was gonna drag 2 suckas...Ooops...Sorry, I meant this time I invited 2 unsuspecting suckas....uuugghhh...it's like this keyboard has its own brain....what I'm trying to say is I brought 2 wonderful friends who believed me when I said 'don't worry, it's not that bad'..lol (insert evil grin here)

We were still sweating about 20 minutes after class ended!!

JukGyal is a 1 hour no pressure cardio workout. It's for beginners, intermediate or advanced in  dance and fitness levels. If you can't whine down to the ground, then go down as far as you can. Just as long as you keep moving. Even though your eyeballs are sweating, it still doesn't feel like a workout. It's fun, interactive, and the music just keeps you hype. At one point Jae looked in my general direction and said "boy some people have a real stush whine!!!" Ha! *waves hand* yup...that would be me.

I cannot stress enough, the next time you see an advertisement for JukGyal...run, don't walk to grab a ticket. It's sexy, it's feminine, it's liberating and it is a bad ass workout with a kick ass instructor!
