5 Must Do’s When Visiting Grenada
I recently spent a glorious week in the Caribbean island of Grenada. Grenada has always been on my bucket list; however, airfare to go there is never cheap! Never! I mean, do they have pots of gold hidden on their island? So when a friend called me up and said ‘Guess who has a hotel voucher for Grenada?’ I immediately packed my bags in search of this island’s riches. Here is a list of the 5 must do’s when visiting Grenada.
1. Chase Waterfalls
Grenada is known for their lush landscape. The greenery is unreal. There are lots of marinas where all the yachts are docked (a lot of rich folk living their best lives on their boats…I’m just a little jealous). They are also known for their beautiful waterfalls. I spent time at Concord Falls. If you are not a strong swimmer like me, they have a little floaty that you can use (I lost a few bad ass points, but I’m alive to talk about it!!!)
I recommend this for stronger swimmers because its shallowest point is 18 feet deep. No thank you! Don’t be discouraged though, Concord is fabulous for pics, and you can stay to watch the professional divers jump from the top. If you are adventurous, you can jump yourself. Again, no thank you!
Another great waterfall to check out in Grenada is Annandale Waterfalls.
I dare to say, this is the most popular waterfalls on the island. When you ask locals which waterfalls you should check out, the answer is usually Annandale. It’s about $2USD to enter the falls, and you can freely swim or jump in while there. There’s a donation box that you can voluntarily give cash towards the divers, who jump for your entertainment. It’s optional, but it is always nice to give a little to show your appreciation.
2. Street Food Wednesday at True Blue Bay Resort
If you ask any local, as to where the hot spot is on a Wednesday night, the answer will always be Street Food Wednesday at True Blue Bay Resort. It’s like 3 different events in one. Every Wednesday night, food vendors from across Grenada assemble at True Blue, and set up a street food market. You buy tickets, and go from vendor to vendor to buy whatever dish tickles your fancy. If you want to sample authentic Grenadian food, like oil down, this is where you can get it. They also feature a live band every week, who were awesome by the way. Later in the night, is the real get down when local DJ’s take over. Honestly, my knees started hurting just from watching some of the dancers! There is nothing sweeter than the party vibe in the Caribbean. Even when you’re rhythm challenged (looks at myself in the mirror), you just want to dance. I highly recommend this event!
3. Snorkelling at the Underwater Sculpture Park
Now in my opinion, this is the ultimate must do when visiting Grenada. I promise that you do not have to be a strong swimmer to try this. On this tour, divers take you out by boat to see a series of sculptures all under water! These sculptures were installed after Hurricane Ivan devastated Grenada in 2004. The purpose of the sculptures are two fold. They were brought in to boost tourism after the hurricane, but they also help to enhance reef and marine life in the area. While there are some sculptures that were installed as just art pieces, the circle of life/children (the most iconic piece) is a symbol of resilience and togetherness to locals.
I would totally recommend Eco Dive as your tour guides. They are located on Grand Anse Beach right next to Coyaba Hotel. If you are nervous, ask for Hansel, THE MOST PATIENT DIVER EVER! I mean, I was so nervous before going out, and he talked me through the whole tour. And ladies, he is quite easy on the eyes, if you know what I’m saying!!! Lol Unfortunately I didn’t get to find out his relationship status for you ladies. I am pretty sure he was young enough to be my son; You know, I just didn’t want to come off like a creep! I like to keep that portion of me hidden! Ha!
4. Beach Hopping
Chile…the beaches! I was upset that I didn’t hire a professional photographer to capture myself in all of my glory on these beaches. My absolute favourite beach in Grenada was BBC Beach otherwise known as Morne Rouge Beach. Please visit BBC Beach! You gotta trust me on this one. The water was crystal clear and calm.
Also, check out Grand Anse Beach, which has repeatedly won the title of Best Beach in the World. I believe Grand Anse Beach is the most popular beach in Grenada. The water is just a tad bit rougher than BBC beach, but equally beautiful. You can literally spend the whole day there, just lost in the beauty. You’ll have to spend approximately 20 Eastern Caribbean dollars ($10 Canadian dollars) to rent a beach chair. But that’s a small price to pay for a day filled of fun at the beach. There is also a mall across the street from Grand Anse Beach that has a grocery store, bank, food court, KFC and Pizza Hut. It literally is a 5 minute walk from the beach.
5. Wild Monkeys at Grand Etang National Park
I think this night have been the highlight of my whole entire trip! I didn’t even realize that having a wild monkey sitting on my shoulder was on my bucket list, but apparently it is….sooooo check! While in Grenada, I checked out Grand Etang National Park. Grand Etang is where you will find Crater Lake, a huge lake located in an old crater. While in Grand Etang I saw the most beautiful wild monkey ever.
Was I terrified when he jumped on me? Yes. Yes I was. Could he care less about me, and was just patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for someone to feed him bananas? He could care less!
However, a little advice; you cannot show fear around the monkeys. They will pick up on your energy and react. I didn’t personally get to see it, but I heard one of the monkeys gave a lady a hot box! Hahahahahahaha… Ok Ok… It’s not nice to laugh. But I would have peed myself if I saw it!
Things You Should Know
-You must get a good tour guide. They can make or break your experience. I used Tom Sanderson from Grenada Tours. He was amazing! Tons of fun and very knowledgeable. If you’d like to book him, check out www.grenadatours.gd
-Try some oil down, which is the national dish of Grenada. It wasn’t meant to be for me since every time I tried to get it, it was sold out, or they only made it on certain days…lol Looks like I’m going to have to go back to try it!
-Check out Prickly Bay on Friday nights for their live band. It was so live. Fridays are also BBQ night, so you can fill your belly too.
-One of the most popular tourist attractions in Grenada is the Chocolate Factory and the Rivers Rum Distillery. At both spots, you’ll get to sample their products. I believe I am still growing hair on my chest from the Rivers rum! However, they do guarantee that you will never have a hangover! Next time I go, I’m going to test that theory.
-Try and check out one of the two Sulphur springs in Grenada. The water is said to be therapeutic, and the sulphur makes for a great exfoliating mask.
- I cannot stress enough to try some street food. Yes, the food in the restaurants are absolutely delicious, but the food from street vendors is blessed. If you want a real feel for authentic Grenadian food, street vendors are the way to go.
Hope this helps!
